Numerous heart, lung, and other respiratory conditions plague many individuals nowadays. Many of these individuals can gain from supplemental oxygen therapy for respiratory care at home, in the hospital, or at a medical institution through the use of home oxygen concentrators or portable oxygen concentrators.

21% of the air we breathe in a room is made up of the gas oxygen. For optimal performance, our bodies require a consistent supply. If your body can’t draw enough oxygen from the ambient air on its own, then a doctor must recommend a strict oxygen therapy dosage explicitly designed for you.

You may already know this, but it is important to reiterate it for emphasis’ sake. Oxygen is a “drug”, but not an addictive one. However, when used without a license, it could be hazardous and life-threatening. Just like other drugs or medications, too much or too little could result in fatal complications.

In this review, we would be examining the features of the AirSep VisionAire 5 home oxygen concentrator. This stationary oxygen concentrator is known to be lightweight, extremely quiet, power efficient, and one with continuous oxygen flow. Let’s take a deeper dive into this unit.

Features and Benefits of the AirSep VisionAire 5 Oxygen Concentrator

Size, Weight, and Design

The VisionAire oxygen concentrator is quite small and compact when compared with other home oxygen concentrators. It measures 20.8 inches in height, 14.1 inches in width, and 11.5 inches in depth. Its size and design with four caster wheels make movement around the home easy and it also blends well into the home environment without causing any obstructions.

It is a lightweight home oxygen concentrator weighing just 30 pounds (13.6kg). Much lighter than other oxygen concentrators of the same capacity.

Humidifier Bottle Holder

Dryness in the mouth, nose, and throat can result from undergoing a continuous flow of medical-grade oxygen, which may result in uncomfortable cracking and nosebleeds. You should use a humidifier bottle to prevent this and improve the overall quality and comfort of your oxygen therapy.

AirSep designed the VisionAire with a built-in humidifier bottle holder that uses an adjustable velcro strap to make utilizing a humidifier bottle easier. It works with all common humidifier bottles. The VisionAire’s connection port for your humidifier bottle and oxygen tubing is located at the top of the device for convenience and easy access.

Flow Rates

As already mentioned above, the VisionAire 5 provides continuous flow settings of 1 to 5 LPM, probably why it’s called VisionAire “5”. Its flow settings move up in increments of 0.5 LPM, which can be regulated with a flowmeter adjustment knob in front of the device.

Power consumption

This VisionAire oxygen concentrator consumes just 290 watts per hour of power on all continuous flow settings. It has been crowned the most power-efficient oxygen concentrator with the second lowest power consumption in the market. This alone could be a deal breaker for some users because home units are known to draw a lot of power. This concentrator would save you money. It works when plugged into AC outlets at home.

Oxygen Monitor

The VisionAire 5 oxygen concentrator could be used with an optional oxygen monitor to verify oxygen concentration levels. This monitor shows the percentage of concentrated oxygen being delivered to the patient per time. This feature comes in useful for patients requiring a strict oxygen therapy dosage.

When the oxygen monitor detects a concentration below 82%, an amber LED indicator on the front panel comes on. If the concentration remains below 82%, an audible 2 – pulse intermittent alarm will sound.

Other Safety features

The AirSep VisionAire 5 has well-defined system alarms. Intermittent audible alarms go off if any of the following occurs:

  1. Power failure
  2. Low pressure
  3. High pressure
  4. Obstruction to oxygen flow
  5. High temperature

Oxygen purity

Just like other oxygen concentrators, this device has an operating range of 87% to 95.5% pure oxygen.

Noise Level

As one of the quietest home oxygen concentrators on the market, it has a sound level of 40 decibels. A peaceful night’s rest and fewer headaches are assured.

Maintenance Free

The machine is the only one on the market that doesn’t require weekly cabinet filter cleaning because it doesn’t have a cabinet filter.

How to Start your AirSep VisionAire 5

  1. Place the appliance in the place where you spend the most time close to an electrical outlet.
  2. Insert the power cord into the outlet.
  3. To turn the device on, place the I/0 power switch in the “I” position. A loud alarm will sound for about 5 seconds.
  4. For units equipped with an oxygen monitor, the low oxygen concentration signal stays on for a few minutes until the oxygen concentration reaches the minimum concentration requirements.
  5. To adjust the flow of supplemental oxygen, move the flowmeter’s adjustment knob to the left or right until the ball inside the device centers on the flow line number recommended by your doctor.
  6. The concentrator is now ready for use.

Accessories available for the AirSep VisionAire 5 Oxygen Concentrator

  1. Humidifier bottle
  2. Nasal cannula
  3. Oxygen tubing
  4. Power cord

Can the VisionAire 5 be used with a CPAP/BiPAP Machine?

Yes, it can. This unit is compatible with most CPAP and BiPAP machines, making it useful to patients with sleep disorders as well.

Is the VisionAire Concentrator FAA Approved?

No, it is not. The unit requires to be connected to a 110V wall outlet to work. And it is too big to fit under the seat in a plane, vehicle, or ship.

Is there any Warranty?

The AirSep VisionAire 5 home oxygen concentrator comes with a 5-year warranty which covers labor and some service parts.

Conclusion

I believe your research for a suitable home oxygen delivery unit should end here. The lightweight, flow settings, and quiet nature of this oxygen concentrator would be the perfect fit for you if you are keen on those factors. Your comfort whilst undergoing long-term oxygen therapy is all that matters. This unit comes highly recommended.

Purchased 2 of these units (at 800.00 each) in January of 2016. One for upstairs and one for downstairs. Upstairs lasted for only 6 months and then compressor unit absolutely died. It sounded like an old car that wouldn’t shut off. I called customer service and they really tried to help replace the unit, but the mfg bailed out on us. Had to package up the unit and ship it back to the mfg for an approximately 4-5 week fix. They are going to fix under warrenty but I think it should last longer than 6 months. Customer service was great but pretty cheesy help from the mfg of the unit.

Compressor bearings fail rapidly, sieve beds are very small and do not have a sufficient amount of molecular sieve to provide a decent amount of service before needing repoured. Beds are crimped and require cutting which in turn once repoured makes the beds smaller yet.
